It was a one-on-one.

Jack stood frozen, his legs stiff, his hands trembling. His heart pounded like a war drum, echoing in his ears.

He could see the attacker’s eyes—sharp, calculating—like a predator eyeing its prey.

Jack knew what he had to do. Close the angle. Make himself big. React fast.

But his body wouldn't move fast enough.

The striker smirked. He had already won.

With a delicate flick of his foot, he sent the ball soaring—a perfect chip.

Jack leapt, stretching desperately—

But it was too late.

The ball sailed over him, spinning gracefully into the back of the net. Effortless. Humiliating.

A moment of silence. Then—

"What the fuck are you doing, Jack? You're so shit at football!"

Laughter. Mocking voices. Disappointed looks from teammates.

The words hit Jack like a sledgehammer to the chest. His fingers curled into fists, nails digging into his palms.

Jack staggered off the pitch, head down, his body hollow, his dreams in pieces.

He didn’t shower. Didn’t even change out of his gloves.

The cold night air stung his skin as he walked home, his thoughts drowning him.

Maybe they were right.

Maybe football wasn’t for me.

His vision blurred. He didn't notice the streetlight turn red.

He didn’t hear the blaring horn.

A force ripped him from existence.

A truck.

His body crashed onto the pavement. Blood pooled. Pain flooded his senses.
