Chapter 5 - Vajra Defeats the Devil!
Chapter 5: Vajra Defeats the Devil!
“Namo Bhaiṣajyaguru Vaidūryaprabha Tathāgata!”
Lu Jin held his prayer beads, pressed his palms together, and bowed his head, chanting the Buddha’s name.
He placed the Buddhist scriptures and the wooden fish before him.
He had no means of exorcism, but at the very least, the rosewood wooden fish was a sacred artifact. Driving away a mere lowly evil spirit should be a simple task.
Whether it would work or not—he would find out soon enough.
Either way, he had nothing to lose if it failed.
Casually flipping open a page of the Buddhist scriptures, he was just about to begin the exorcism when—
The corpse on the ground seemed to sense danger and suddenly released a chilling aura.
Lu Jin, being the closest, felt his hands and feet turn ice-cold in an instant. The eerie energy seeped into his body, making him feel unbearably heavy.
Whoosh!
A cold breath brushed against his ear.
In the reflection of the nearby mirror, Lu Jin caught sight of a disheveled old man clinging to his back.
The figure was gaunt and flickering in and out of sight.
Black mist coiled around its body, and its twisted face was filled with unspeakable malice.
Sensing his gaze, the old man slowly turned his head toward the mirror.
Their eyes met.
The old man grinned.
A wave of terror shot through Lu Jin, making his hair stand on end.
I can’t breathe!
The suffocating chill wrapped around him like a noose, tightening around his throat.
His breathing grew labored.
The old man’s mouth gaped open wide, lunging toward his neck—
Lu Jin’s body was paralyzed by the numbing cold. He couldn’t move.
He could only watch helplessly as the old man closed in.
Buzz!
At the very moment the evil spirit struck, the faint traces of Buddhist power in Lu Jin’s body—gained from chanting scriptures—were suddenly awakened as if stimulated by the attack.
In an instant, the sound of Buddhist chants filled the air.
A shimmering, translucent image of the Buddha emerged behind Lu Jin.
The radiant Buddha light spread out like the warmth of spring melting snow, dispelling the sinister aura around him.
The ghostly figure clinging to his back was forced into a corner by the divine light.
Its body sizzled and smoked where the light touched, its face twisted in agony.
Lu Jin, previously frozen, regained control over his body.
His heart still pounded with lingering fear, but at the same time, a surge of anger rose within him.
He had nearly been taken down by this wretched spirit!
“Foul creature!”
With a cold snort, Lu Jin grabbed the striker and struck the wooden fish with force.
The sound resonated with his fury.
The crisp, ethereal chime echoed like a divine thunderclap, rippling outward.
A wrathful Vajra apparition emerged from the sound, gripping a vajra pestle and smashing it down upon the evil spirit.
The Vajra, with its fierce, glaring eyes, sought not salvation—only destruction.
With a single strike, the evil spirit’s form was shattered, nearly obliterated.
“Namo Bhaiṣajyaguru Vaidūryaprabha Tathāgata!”
Lu Jin softly recited the Buddha’s name. Seeing the spirit’s pitiful state, his anger subsided slightly.
His expression, however, remained stern and commanding.
“Foul creature, today I shall deliver you to Buddhahood. If you remain stubborn, you will be annihilated!”
The evil spirit shrank into the corner, terror-stricken as it gazed at Lu Jin.
Its weak, flickering form seemed on the verge of vanishing, completely incapable of resistance.
Lu Jin opened his Buddhist scriptures and began chanting.
“Thus have I heard. At one time, the Budha was traveling among various lands, and he arrived at the great city of Vaishali. There, beneath the tree of melodious sound, he dwelled with a great assembly of eight thousand monks. Alongside them were thirty-six thousand great bodhisattvas, as well as kings, ministers, Brahmins, laypeople, celestial beings, nagas, yakshas, and countless other beings who reverently gathered to listen to his teachings…”
The sound of sutra recitations echoed through the room.
With each strike of the wooden fish, the ethereal chime harmonized with the chanting.
The evil spirit’s dark energy slowly dissipated under the sacred sound, its once-ferocious expression softening into peace.
The malevolent gleam in its eyes faded, replaced by clarity.
It pressed its hands together in gratitude and bowed slightly to Lu Jin.
As golden light enveloped its form, the ghostly figure gradually dissolved into nothingness.
“Hah…”
Lu Jin let out a long breath.
The exorcism had seemed straightforward, but in truth, he had been tense the entire time.
After all, his inner reserves of Buddhist power had long been depleted.
Had the spirit resisted with all its might, he would have been in serious trouble.
Now that the spirit had been freed, Lu Jin braced himself against his trembling legs and attempted to stand.
Shua!
A golden light suddenly descended from the sky, striking him directly.
Bathed in the divine radiance, Lu Jin looked utterly bewildered.
His previously weakened body was instantly revitalized as though he had consumed a supreme elixir.
The pallor of his face vanished, replaced by a healthy flush.
Even the Buddhist power he had exhausted was instantly replenished—and not just restored, but amplified several times over!
Now, he possessed at least twenty or thirty strands of divine energy.
“What… is this?”
Lu Jin’s eyes widened as he gazed at the golden light gradually merging into his body.
This energy…
It looks suspiciously like the legendary Karmic Merit!
It was said that in times of chaos, those who restored order and upheld righteousness would be blessed with merit.
Those with great merit would, upon death, enter the Six Realms of Rebirth and ascend to one of the Three Good Realms.
The Six Realms were divided into:
The Three Good Realms: Heavenly Realm, Human Realm, Asura Realm
The Three Evil Realms: Hell Realm, Hungry Ghost Realm, Animal Realm
For cultivators, merit was akin to the most potent of elixirs, capable of directly enhancing one’s spiritual attainment—without any drawbacks.
With enough merit, one could even achieve the Golden Body of Merit, transcending the cycle of reincarnation.
Lu Jin had always thought merit was nothing more than legend.
He never expected it to be real.
What do you think?
